Lifestyle Moving & Storage moves pianos throughout New York City and across state lines. A piano is one of the hardest items in any home to relocate: it is heavy, awkwardly balanced, structurally delicate, and expensive to repair. Getting it wrong once can crack a soundboard, snap a leg, or damage the action beyond a simple fix.

Our crews are trained specifically for piano work, use equipment built for the job, and are licensed and insured. We have been moving instruments in this city for eight years, through walk-ups, freight elevators, brownstone staircases, and doorways nobody thought a grand would fit through.

MOVING DAY

On moving day, our team arrives to efficiently handle the move with care.

Pianos We Move

  • Spinet, console, studio and full upright pianos
  • Baby grand, parlor grand and concert grand pianos
  • Digital pianos, stage pianos and weighted keyboards
  • Organs and harpsichords
  • Piano benches, stools, lids, legs and hardware

What NYC Piano Moving Service Includes

  • On-site assessment of the instrument, the route, and the access at both ends
  • Disassembly of legs, lyre and pedal assembly on grands
  • Wrapping in quilted pads with corner and edge protection
  • Piano board, skid, straps, and dollies rated for the weight
  • Protection for floors, walls, doorways, stairwells and elevators
  • Loading, secured transport and unloading
  • Reassembly and placement in the room you want it
  • Local moves within NYC and long-distance transport to other states
  • Climate-controlled storage when the destination is not ready

We do not tune pianos, and no piano should be played seriously right after a move anyway. Give it a few weeks to settle into the new room’s humidity, then bring in your tuner.

Stairs, Elevators and Tight Turns

Most New York piano moves come down to the route, not the instrument. Before moving day, we confirm the number of stairs, the width of every doorway and landing, the freight elevator dimensions, and the loading zone situation at both addresses. That determines the crew size, the equipment we bring, and whether the grand needs to come apart before it leaves the room.

If your building requires a Certificate of Insurance for the service elevator, we issue it directly to management ahead of the date.

Loading, Transport and Setup

We pick the piano up from your home, studio, or business, secure it upright or on its side depending on the instrument, and transport it in a truck equipped for the load. At the destination, we unload, reassemble, level the instrument, and place it where you want it. You do not need to be involved beyond telling us which wall it goes against.

Piano Storage

If there is a gap between your move-out and move-in, our climate-controlled facility holds pianos in stable temperature and humidity, which matters far more for an instrument than for a sofa. We inventory and wrap everything before it goes into the vault, and we deliver it back on your schedule.

What Piano Moving Costs

Price depends on the instrument type and size, the number of stairs at each address, whether elevator access is available, the distance between the two locations, and whether disassembly and storage are involved. Moving a studio upright between two ground-floor apartments in the same neighborhood is straightforward. A concert grand coming down four flights of a brownstone is not, and the quote reflects that.

TESTIMONIALS

I recently hired Lifestyle Moving for a move from Westchester into Manhattan. The team was extremely helpful, communicative, and professional. The flat-rate quote was very reasonable compared to other highly rated movers in the area, and the the sales and coordinating team ensured all details were addressed before moving day. The day of the move, the team led by Gilberto was very efficient, careful with my belongings, and flexible in light of logistical challenges. I would highly recommend to anyone planning a move in New York.
Gil and his team is excellent!
This is my fifth or so move with Lifestyle Moving because they are fantastic. I used to use the bigger companies but I found that they cared less about my items and would add on new charges. I’ve had to move a lot in the last few years and it’s always been stressful but Lifestyle has helped ease a lot of the stress. Vaso has been booking my moves and always send great men for my jobs. The pricing is extremely fair and straightforward. For today’s move I had Gilberto and Luis who were fantastic. I’m the worst packer and ran out of bags at 4am. Gilberto and Luis promptly showed up at 9am and saw my mess. They loaned boxes to help. They were so fast and efficient and even helped to unpack the boxes. I can’t recommend Lifestyle enough! The men Vaso sends are always deserving of a great tip because they take away 90% of my stress!
Gilberto is amazing and reliable during the move!
Great moving experience! The team was responsive, arrived fully prepared, and worked quickly and efficiently. Bryan, Miguel, and Milos handled everything with care—nothing was damaged or lost. Highly reliable service at a fair hourly rate.
An incredibly difficult move was made simple by this outstanding crew. They were speedy, friendly, and meticulous with my belongings. My electronics were handled with extra care, and their ability to organize the storage unit was truly impressive.

FAQs About Piano Moving in NYC

Do you move both upright and grand pianos?

Both, along with spinets, consoles, baby grands, parlor grands, concert grands, digital and stage pianos, organs, and harpsichords. Equipment and crew size vary by instrument. Uprights usually travel upright on a padded piano board, while grands are partially disassembled and moved on their side on a skid board.

For most grands, yes. The legs, lyre, and pedal assembly come off on site; the body is wrapped in quilted pads and strapped to a skid board, and the piano is carried on its bass side. At the destination, we reassemble it, level it, and place it where you want it before we leave.

Plan on it, but not right away. Give the piano a few weeks to settle into the new room’s humidity and temperature, then book a tuning. The new environment affects pitch more than the transport does. We don’t tune pianos, so a local technician handles that step.

In most cases, yes. Before moving day, we confirm the number of stairs, the width of each run, the landing turns, and the doorway dimensions at both addresses. That tells us the crew size and equipment to send. Prewar buildings, tight turns, and low ceilings are routine for us, and we plan the route instead of improvising on the day.

One to two weeks is a good target, and further out, at the end of the month and through the summer, when buildings restrict elevator windows and crews book up. Last-minute dates are sometimes available. Booking early also gives building management time to approve the COI, which can take several days.

Yes. We’re licensed and fully insured, and we issue a COI directly to building management, often the same day. We also coordinate elevator reservations, loading zone access, and doorman or freight rules at both the pickup and the delivery address.
